Theming with CSS variables
Remap Scout UI's paper, night, accents, typography, focus, and component hooks with plain CSS.
Search terms: theming, CSS variables, paper, night, focus, Tailwind
Scout UI ships a recognizable default skin, not a JavaScript theme runtime. Every component works without Tailwind, CSS-in-JS, or a theme provider.
Start from semantic foundations
Set variables on .sui-theme, [data-sui-theme], or your own ancestor. Keep
paper and night readable, and remap focus independently from decorative accents.
.my-scout-theme {
--sui-paper: #fffaf0;
--sui-ink: #17131b;
--sui-ultraviolet: #6330e8;
--sui-focus: #005fcc;
--sui-focus-separation: #fffefa;
}Keep focus semantic
An accent may become a brand color, but focus, danger, disabled, and forced-color roles must remain independently legible. Test focus outside hard shadows on both paper and night surfaces.
Supply typography locally
Override --sui-font-display, --sui-font-body, and --sui-font-mono. Scout
UI does not download fonts or require Bricolage, Inter, or Geist Mono at
runtime.
Customize intentionally
Use documented .sui-* classes and public --sui-* component variables for
meaningful contracts. Do not depend on variables containing -internal-; they
belong to imperative engines and may change.
